Pipa, Guzheng & Guqin Performing artist; Chairman of Hunan Plucked String Instrument Society, Hunan Province, PR China 

 

From Changsha, Hunan Province, Lisa Zou (邹留莎) is a Pipa, Guzheng and Guqin performing artist. Born in a family of Chinese music tradition, Lisa began studying the erhu at a very young age and then started Pipa and Guzheng training at 5 years old.  She studied pipa with well-known pipa musician, Jinghua Li, from China Music Academy ( 中国音乐学院). In 1982 she graduated from Hunan Changsha Music College and then worked at the Hunan Huaguxi Theatrical Group (花鼓戏剧院) as the leading pipa player.  From 1985 to 1987, she went to China Conservatory of Music ( 中国音乐学院), and further studied Pipa with Dehai Liu (刘德海), the most famous Pipa master in China.  From 1987 to 1988, Lisa joined Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (香港中乐团), studied Pipa with Jinghua Li. 

 

From 1993 to 1996, Lisa went to China National Orchestra (中央乐团), studied Guzheng with Wang Di (王迪) and Li Wanfen (李婉芬), very famous Guzheng artists in China.  Starting from late 80s, Lisa studied Guqin with daughter of Shaochun Liu (刘少椿), the well-known Guqin artist for GuaLing Group (广陵派). Then Lisa studied Guqin with other groups, such as Sichuan Group (蜀派) and participated in many Guqin conferences and festivals to promote the ancient Chinese music and arts. 

 

In over twenty years of Chinese classical music performance and music education for young artists, she has won many awards and has trained thousands of players of Chinese music instruments.  Her students have ranged from 3 years old to 80 years old.  In addition, she has visited over thirty countries for performances, training and culture exchanges, including United States, where she now resides in RTP area in North Carolina.
